Lately I have been struggling with the problem of desiring things that stray me away from Christ and my walk in my my faith. I started going natural as are a lot of women these days but natural or permed it still takes a lot of work, time and money to maintain and because of that your work you do on your hair takes time ways from doing good works in your faith, takes ways time you should be spending growing in your faith and makes you spend spend spend while your money goes to waste on products that may or may not work instead of saving your money or using it for a good cause. Now, before I started writing this I had no idea how to describe what I and others like me were doing. And by the way, this does not only have to deal with hair alone; I’m talking about desiring what ever is outside of Christ; things that are mostly carnal and of this world. I was unsure of what I was going through until I came upon a sermon by John Piper and he said something that made me feel CONVICTED! He was talking about being consumed with things so much that it seems you are trying to fill a void when really we should be consumed in Christ! I was so sure that God wanted to be to hear that message and I took it to heart. Now that still didn’t stop me from desiring all that hair stuff or from being consumed in it. But I realized that all this consumption and desire was for were things of this world. Not to say that my hair is not mine and not on my head and I don’t need to take care of it for good hygiene’s sake but it was not and still isn’t necessary for me to be so into it like I am. Today as I was looking for answers to my problems I read scripture after scripture after scripture and each one was leading me right to the one I needed at that moment. I came upon an article or blog that gave me the very answer I was seeking and that is nothing but God showing me the truth! In this article the author describes how satin uses many things to deceive us. Even things we would never even think of. He used an example of a husband working long hours which barely gave him time for his wife and children. In this example a person’s job and desire for a large salary is satin’s way of keeping families broken a part. If the man in this example turned to Christ instead of his Job his family would not be so badly broken. It just shows how deceptive the devil is and how he can use anything and everything to try and turn one away from Christ and the things that are most important. Scripture tells us in James 1:15 that when we give in to our own desires, we sin as a result of it and sin brings for death. We cannot let the devil lead us away from Christ and that is what he has done to so many people for years and years. With technology, with clubs, with pornography, with capitalism, fashion and so much more. His goal is to keep us as far away from Christ as possible. If we allow him to do that we are allowing ourselves to be slaves to sin and also live a fast forgettable life that meant nothing.
Now, I mentioned filling a void and I just want to explain that because it might be confusing. When someone feels that they are lacking in some area of their life whether it be love or confidence or what have you, they turn to other outlets and allow those things to fill that empty space in their lives. If we call on Jesus he will always answer. You have to open your heart and know that Christ is all you need and He will fill every single crack in your life. I don’t mean give you material things but he will give a lift spiritually and mentally. Since God showed me all of this I have stopped sending in entries for the 31 haute days of hair contest where I could win a bunch of hair products because I realized I was letting it consume me. I have been wanting a hair steamer for a while now and this contest was one way could get it free so I was gonna try for that but it turned into me entering daily and I was getting upset because I missed a day which was crazy. Once again I just want to stress to you that you should be careful what you desiring or lusting after. 9 times out of 10 if it is not Christ its something that will bring you to sin.
Scripture of the day James 1: 13-14
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
